Bibliographic Inquiries
Send details of the edition, imprint, or provenance question you are working through. Include any inscriptions, bookplates, or auction records you already hold. A member of the research desk replies within two working days.
Whether you are verifying a provenance trail, preparing a collection for appraisal, or deciding how to store a fragile first printing, the support desk is the first place to turn. Tell us where you are in the process and we will point you to the right service, document, or specialist.
Whether you are verifying a provenance, assessing a condition, or planning a catalogue, the support desk directs you to the right service and the right specialist.
Straight answers about provenance checks, condition reports, and how a bibliographic consultation actually works.
Send clear photos of the title page, colophon, binding, and any ownership marks such as bookplates or inscriptions. If you have a previous auction record or dealer invoice, include that too. We begin with a visual review, then move to bibliographic databases and reference works to trace the chain of custody.
A condition assessment describes the physical state of the book: paper quality, binding integrity, annotations, foxing, and any repairs. It does not assign a monetary figure. A valuation, which we can arrange separately, uses that condition report alongside market comparables. Many collectors start with the assessment to decide whether a full appraisal is worth the cost.
We work on single volumes, small groups, and full estate libraries. A single-item inquiry is common, especially for inherited books or a recent auction purchase you want verified. The process is the same: we examine the item, document its features, and give you a clear written summary of findings and recommended next steps.
Yes. We advise on deaccessioning by helping you identify which items fit your collecting goals and which are surplus. For sales, we prepare detailed cataloguing notes and connect you with auction houses or dealers we trust. We do not buy books ourselves, so the advice stays neutral.
We produce a bibliographic record for each item: author, title, imprint, collation, binding, provenance, and condition notes. For private libraries, we can also suggest a simple shelf arrangement and a basic conservation priority list. The catalogue is delivered as a structured document you can keep or share with insurers.
We assess the book's rarity, historical significance, and current condition. If the binding is fragile or the paper is brittle, we recommend a conservator from our referral network. We do not perform conservation work ourselves, but we can help you understand what is urgent and what can wait.

For urgent matters concerning an acquisition decision or a condition report, call the desk directly. Telephone consultations are available Tuesday through Friday between 10:00 and 16:00 Malaysia time.
Estate libraries and private collections can be reviewed in person at the Ipoh archive. Appointments are scheduled two weeks in advance so that cataloguing staff can prepare the necessary reference materials.
When a volume requires binding repair or leaf restoration, the desk provides referrals to conservators who specialise in early printed material. Referrals include a written assessment of the recommended treatment.
Submit a request to trace ownership history through bookplates, marginalia, and auction catalogues. Research files are compiled with cited sources and delivered as a bound dossier for your records.
Before bidding or purchasing, the desk can review a shortlist of lots and advise on condition, rarity, and fair market context. This service is intended for collectors building a focused library.
